About Us
History
Tempo is a corporation that was established in 1990 by Eugene Lesmez and Betulia Sanchez. Eugene was a New Yorker who spent 27 years living and working in Latin America as a business consultant and professor for three universities. He worked with organizations such as Washington Educational Research Associates (WERA) based in California, which exports ESL books to Peru (South America). After many years away from the USA, he decided to come back to his beautiful Country.
Between 1988-89 he worked as a volunteer advisor to Hispanic small business P.G. community college; Montgomery College; Suburban Washington Small Business Development Center.
Working with the Hispanic community, he saw the need for a specialty bookstore dedicated to help students from different nationalities who need to improve their English and a place for teachers to find teaching materials.
In 1990 with a modest investment, Eugene and his partner Betulia Sanchez decided to open Tempo Bookstore to help the immigrant community by supplying resources to learn and teach English. This is how Tempo Bookstore was founded.
Today, Tempo continues helping the community with a wide variety of foreign language learning materials for adult students and children. There is also a wide range of dictionaries covering specialized professional topics and foreign language learning aides.
TEMPO’s greatest strength is good customer service and reliability with 30 years of professional experience. The staff is knowledgeable and can point any customer to locate the right book or material needs. Tempo provides door-to-door delivery services in an effort to meet all customers’ needs.
Eugene Lesmez died in June 2017, and his partner Betulia Sanchez continues with Gene’s vision for “TEMPO” to succeed in business and improve the education of newcomers. His legacy continues with a yearly scholarship for a nonprofit school for adult education.
